I have the honor to report to you that the statement of Mr. Sergeant of Columbia Texas in [[strikethrough]] correct [[/strikethrough]] reference to money paid by him, (Sergeant) to me as wages of Freedman (Edward) in his (Sergeants) employ is correct.

At the time I arrested Sergeant and the money was paid to me the freedman was absent and I have not had an opportunity of seeing him since. I have the money required and will pay it whenever the proper person presents his claim for it.
