Matters had arrived at such a pass, that during the stay of Thayer and Noyes Circus at this place, -(in the first week of the present month)-, Freedmen to the number of thirty or forty assembled in a body, armed with various weapons, with the avowed intention of wreaking their vengeance on such soldiers as they could find, in retaliation for the assaults and robberies committed about the Circus.
