Major Genl. Chas. Griffin
Comdg &c.

General:
I am desired to write a word of commendation for Thos. J. Kurtz late of the 91st Regt. Penna Vols, who has applied for a position with you as Clerk.

He was at the Head Qrs of the old 1st Div. while I was in command and he was considered our best clerk. I do not hesitate to commend him because he served with his musket till he was disabled and then did Good Service until the close of the War with his pen. He had some good discipline at my Head Qrs, and I think profited by it, and you will find him I have no doubt a reliable man.

Very Truly
Your Friend & Servt
(Sgd) J.L. Chamberlain
