The State of Texas;
Colorado County.

Before me, Edward Collier, a Notary Public in, & for, Colorado County, Texas, this day, personally came & appeared James L. Walker, to me well known, & under oath, that he was at a barbacue, at the residence of Dr. John H. Crisp, in said County, given by said Crisp, to his former slaves, on the 4th of July A.D., 1865, that at said barbacue there was Major L.B. Houston, U.S.A, then commanding the Post of Columbus, in said State & County, & Capt.  Walker, U.S.A., the then Provost Martial at said Post, & that on said day, in the presence of said United States Army Officers & in affiants presence, & other persons were there; [[inkblot] [[?]] Crisp & his said former slaves, made  & entered into the following contract, to wit: In consideration of the said Crisp's feeding, clothing, & physicing said former slaves, they said former slaves were to work for said Crisp as they had always done until the next Christmas; which was assented to by both contracting parties, to wit: said Crisp & his said former slaves; & said U.S.A. officers recommended, to, & advised the ratification of said contract, by said former slaves; starting, at the same time that it was the best they could do. Affiant further states that there were a great many more consumers on the plantation of said Crisp, than producers
