Maj. Gen. Griffin,
Commdg District of Texas,

Sir;

On the 15th Feb last I informed you by letter that a certain person had recently taken to Texas from Ala several freedmen against their consent, [[crossed out]] has [[/crossed out]] and against the consent of their mother, having had them bound to him upon ex haste application & hearing. I proposed to find out the whereabouts of this man (King) to submit to you all the facts in the case, that you might proceed to have justice done. My communication was returned to me endorsed "March 15 1867 - Respectfully returned to Mr. Darby Montgomery Texas. Proceed with this case and you will be compensated, By order of Bvt Maj Genl Griffin -

Upon receipt of this assurance I opened correspondence with an Attorney in Ala, who stated to me all the particulars. I then addressed you another communication (several weeks ago) setting forth these particulars. This is a history of the case
