Sir -  
On Thursday morning the 10th inst as Lt Jas Lowrie and myself my step Daughter and Mr Darley at whos house we were being entertained as guests, none of us being armed or at the time anticipating an attack. The room in which we were sitting was suddenly & violently entered by four men (big)  JO Stevens, B.F. Pior, Dick Slade and Thos Slade armed with cocked double barrel shot guns and a six shooter each, demanded my unconditional surrender to their will, whatever that will might be, at the same time threatening me with death, But desired that I accompany them alive to Livingston in order to remit or
