Caswell Smith sworn says.
I belonged to Dr. John H Crips as a slave, when set free he told me he wanted all of the old hands to remain and work till Christmas and gather the crop. I staid with my wife Maria, Daughter Mary and Son Manuel. He said he would give me ten Dollars per month and my clothes. Eight Dollars per month for my wife and her clothes. Eight Dollars per month for Mary and her clothes and Manuel four Dollars per month and his clothes. After Christmas I asked for my money but got none. I went to the Bureau with five or six other hands. Nathan Axiom, Charles Thornton, Sandy Erwin, Grandison Smith and Anderson Lee with me to see if the hands could get our money after the Dr. said he could not pay us.
