Fabe Caldwell sworn -
I formerly belong to Dr. John H. Crisp. I was first told I was free the first Sunday after the U.S. troops arrived in Columbus - Dr. Crisp told me I was free - He came down to the quarters and read a paper and told me we were free and wanted us all to remain and he would give men ten dollars per month and the women eight dollars per month and younger hands in proportion. I staid and worked til the subsequent Christmas. He told us all publicly he would he give the wages I have said - and he after told me in the garden he would give it, though he said he ought not to. My wife Patience staid and washed for the family. He Dr. Crisp said he would pay her eight dollars per month. I had two boys - Frederick 12 or 13 years old and Jim 15 years about. Dr. Crisp told me he would give seven dollars per month for Jim and what Fred'k was worth and was right. I have received nothing but twenty one yds of cloth, cotton for shirting; one pair of shoes for myself and a round about coat. Neither myself or family ever received anything else - though I
