Henry Schavens sworn says,
I formerly belonged to Dr. John H. Crisp. On the Sunday after the troops arrived Dr. Crisp told us we were free. He said he wanted me to stay till Christmas and he would pay me ten Dollars per month and my wife Susan eight  I went to the house where my wife was working. The Dr saw me and asked me what I was doing there. I told him I came to see my wife who was sick. He said if I got to cutting up or going off he would blow my brains out and he hauled out a pistol and said he had a good notion to do it any way. I told him I was not going off and he said I better not. My son John also staid with me and my wife on the place and worked till Christmas. John is twelve years old. I have received for my work one pair of shoes for my self, one pair of pants for myself, one shirt and one blouse also one hat for myself. My wife received eight yds. of domestics, and one pair of shoes. My son received nothing. I have never received one cent from
