This was in 1865 just after the Federal troops first arrived in Columbus. After he read the paper to us, he said he wanted us to remain and work till Christmas and he would give us Ten Dollars per month and our clothes besides, or he would give me as much as any other man. He tried to get us to stay at first for our victuals and clothes. I have three children that also staid and worked with me - My wife Edith, Daughters Edith, Mary and Isabella. They were to all get full women' wages. I never received anything but one pair of shoes, one pair of pants and one blouse for myself: forty yds. of domestics and one pair of shoes each for my wife and children. He said he would settle
