Grandson Vincent sworn says.
I formerly belonged to Dr. John H. Crisp. When the troops arrived at Columbus, the Sunday after the Doctor says to me "did Nathanial tell all of you boys what I told him to, that you were all free and that I wanted you all to remain and work till Christmas and I would give the men ten dollars per month and the women eight." I told him yes, that Nathan had told me so. He wanted to know if I would stay, as he said I had always been a good boy and never gave him any trouble. I was his blacksmith eighteen years and worked at my trade after I was free for the Doctor up to Christmas. The Doctor kept the blacksmith shop as a public one and I did all the work for the public in the vicinity and the Doctor took the pay. My family consisted of self, wife Betsy and boy John Green.

I never got any money for any of my work. I spoke to him once and he said "Grandson my crop has failed this year and I cannot pay you. I have never had any conversation with Dr. D.H. Crisp in relation to the claim I now make. I never told him it was an unjust claim and if I received the money I would pay it back to my old master, but did tell him about
