Talbot Massie sworn says.
I formerly belonged to Dr. John H. Crisp and also my wife Clora Aun & Alex. After being set free he told me at the same time he talked to all of the rest of the hands, if I would remain with my wife and Alex my son till Christmas and work he would give me ten Dollars per month and my wife eight Dollars per month, and for my son Alex, whatever he was worth. Alex was 12 years old and picked cotton. We all staid and worked till Christmas. He never paid us any money. He gave myself wife and son our clothes. Grandison Smith, Grandson Vincent Charles Thornton, Nathaniel Axiom, Sandy Evan and myself went over to the Bureau at Columbus to see if we could get our money, as the Doctor told us he did not owe us anything. Just after we were set free Jim Crisp son of the Doctor's brought to us and had a paper he said he wanted us to sign, agreeing to work till Christmas for our victuals and clothes. He tried half a Day to get us all to sign but we would not. He then told us in the presence of Lt Col. Wilkinson 30th Mo. Inf'ty he would be obliged to pay us
