and that the said Delano be relieved from the cruelty and oppression now heaped upon him and that [[strikethrough]] we [[/strikethrough]] he have that protection which is due to the citizen, especially when he is incarcerated as a fellon, with horse thieves and not allowed the privilege or latitude of the informer, and deserter. In conclusion, we respectfully state that the soldier who made the affidavit is not entitled to any credit whatever, as the same soldier made statements very slanderous of the family of Mr. Sturgiss, and now shields himself by saying, that Delano persuaded him to make them. But he made them in the absence of Delano, and to several one of whom was L.B. Barton, Sheriff of this County.-So little confidence is placed in the soldiers statement, on affidavit, that the citizens offer bail for the sum of One hundred thousand dollars, until, an investigation can be had. He respectfully refers you to the soldiers at this place, for the character for veracity of the soldier who made the affidavit.
