commonly five or ten, sometimes as high as twenty five cents a month. During the winter especially the number contributing has been so small, that the expenses have been in arrears, & the school become several dollars indebted to the Principal. One class had adopted the Class Book of Science, published by Hammersly of Hartford, (a book of much permanent value,) for a reading book, paying themselves seventy five cents a copy. Two or three other classes much need some appropriate & cheap reading book; while for beginners, the easy reading of the "Freedman" paper seem to be more suitable than any book to be found. A gratuitous supply of Colburn's Arithmetic, with oral teaching & the blackboard, meet our wants in this branch. A blackboard, a cupboard for books & papers, & a shed in the yard for wood & coal, have been provided by the school.
