at a heavy interest, if they built the house this year. They estimated the cost of the building at $1500 and upwards. Hence they concluded the offer made was not a sufficient inducement to put up a schoolhouse this season. Besides they thought the colored children were already sufficiently provided for, at any rate for the present. I met these objections and further offered to get a subscription from the freedmen. They assented to this and agreed to consider the matter further, and seemed favorably disposed. I then got the freedmen together twice, created a general interest in the matter, and obtained a subscription of over $100. Some more can be obtained. They have to raise now $200 to pay on their Methodist Church, and several hundred more during the year. This was the great and only drawback. I again asked the Board of Education to meet, but they having failed to do this, and having conversed with individual members, I judged it expedient not to bring the matter before them again, until I am authorized to offer more than $200 from the Bureau,
