Malden Township. - The school districts, and the enumeration of scholars are as follows:

District No. 2 - scholars - 11 } These two districts lie near together
District No. 3 - scholars - 16 } and could send scholars to the same school.

I met the Board of Education in this township, and submitted to them the proposition of the Bureau, and urged the matter as discreetly and forcibly as possible. I presented their own interest in building now, the necessity of some better provision than the present in order to good schools, the state and national policy of educating every class and condition, and met all their objections.

The only point of any account which they made in reply was, that they had contracted for school houses for white children, to the amount of $4000, so that they were obliged to issue bonds, [[strikethrough]] and wait for [[/strikethrough]] payable from the tax levy of 1868. I then proposed to get subscriptions from the freedmen. The Board favored this idea, and intimated that they would build at least two houses.
