There would probably be a school of 25 or 30 scholars this winter, and they would soon be under legal obligations to provide a school. The whole community, with three or four notable exceptions, are violently opposed to the school. And "Buffalo Independent" has put in circulation the most malicious and disgusting story in regard to your agent, with no other apparent motive than to stir up a mob of the lower class. If a house could be provided here, the freedmen would give liberally for them, and a few of the citizens would, I think, give something. Dr. McNary sends word to me this week, that he is agent to sell a house, suitable for a school, 45 ft. by 20 ft., for $450. he is a staunch friend of the freedmen and of the Bureau. Several of the freedmen say they will give $10. each towards it, with the understanding that they may also use it for worship.
