cousin to Mr. Philip Sublerh No 1, on or about the 1st of June 1866, shot and killed Freedman Daniel Kallya, no particulars given me, said to be an unprovoked attack, no action taken by the civil authorities.
7th. Mrs. Tanner a Union lady temporarily residing in this town is frequently insulted and upon several occasions her house has been broken into by parties of ruffians, she has appealed to me for protection the civil authorities failing to act in the matter.
8th. Private Patk Downey 6th U S Cav, a convalescent soldier left here with typhoid fever when the detachment was ordered away, has been several times attacked while confined to bed, and upon one occasion in open daylight a party of rowdies gave him 24 hours time to leave town. I was obliged to remove him to my office where he continues to remain, never venturing out after dark.
9th. Freed-girl Lizzie Ellen Ball was assaulted and beaten by one Lydia Smith a white woman of doubtful reputation, case tried before a Justice of the Peace and the Freed-girl fine $10.00 and costs, in all about $23.00, proceedings examined by me after my advent here and set aside.
