Education

The feeling of the white people upon the subject of education, is about the same as stated in my last report. no encouragement is given to any movement looking towards the advancement of the freedpeople in that respect.
Their feelings upon the subject do not appear to be hostile, yet they are unwilling to assist or encourage the freedpeople in their efforts to establish schools for the education of their children
The freedpeople themselves are making some effort to establish schools in certain localities in this district, on plantations where large schools can be organized. I am giving them all the encouragement and assistance I can, and I think that by the first of May next, they
