away, a boy in the crowd told Bell that while he was assaulting the negro, he (the (negro) had placed his hand on the side where his pistol was supposed to be.  Bell preferred a complaint of "Assault and Battery" with intent to kill"! against the negro.  The examination took place before the Mayor and the negro was acquitted, the evidence clearly showing that Bell was the aggressor in word and action, and that the negro did not dare even to defend himself.

Complaint has been made against Bell for "Assault and Battery" and "False Imprisonment" and he will probably be tried [[strikethrough]] but [[/strikethrough]] the next term of the County Court, which sits this week.

In regard to the murder of John Catchings which I reported on the 30th ult. I have learned some further particulars.  Catchings had assisted in tracking and finding some horses which were stolen from a neighbor of his, by an organized gang of horsethieves who live on the borders of Caldwell and Bastrop Counties.  For this reason these men threatened vengeance on him, and others also.  The man from whom the horses were stolen has been in and states that the same set have also threatened his life and that of his sons.  The people in the neighborhood are afraid to make any attempt to have the parties arrested as they have repeatedly sworn to kill any one
