as will be seen a large number of frivolous cases brought against the freedmen, which were malicious cases; these, were very properly dismissed by the Court. In my opinion justice has been rendered to the freedmen. I have attended the Court every day during it's sitting and have noticed that fair trials have been given to the freedmen, and also that where freedmen had no Counsels that the presiding Judge (Shropshire) appointed the best lawyers in Court to defend the same. Also, the juries have weighed & borne in mind the former status of the freedman and have taken into consideration that the freedman often times commits a crime (and a serious one) but through his ignorace does not think it a crime - and they (the Juries) have invariably dealt leniently with them. The low mean class of the Community, id est, the irresponsible men decry the action of the Court and the Juries
