X In regard to the education of the freedpeople, I must say, that, since the advent of Mr Booth the freedpeople have been aroused and they are all sending their children to school, the school is increasing every day, as Mr Booth's report will shew and in fact he has applied to me to have an Asst, he believe that Mr Gregory would be a good Assistant to him in the elementary classes, were he Appointed. I cannot but express my great satisfaction at the manner in which Mr Booth conducts his school. I have visited it twice since his arrival, and have noticed a marked improvement in the conduct & advancement of the pupils.

The freedpeople are now erecting here a new church & School House which will cost some fifteen hundred dollars, I have, therefore not made any contract for desks in the old School House, believing, it were better to place them
