a party, trial in the civil courts. The accord of trials, and the number, and character, of the complaints made by the freedpeople against their employers, and others, have convinced me that the white people of this county, with - but very few exceptions, will cheat, and swindle the freedpeople. whenever they think they can do so with safety  to themselves. The shamefully dishonest course which has generally been pursued by the white people of this county in their dealings with the freedpeople up to the present times, has caused them to entirely forfeit the confidence of the freedpeople. The only justice which the freedpeople of this country have obtained since their freedom has been that which they have obtained through the Bureau. I believe the feeling sustained by the white people of this country toward the freedpeople to be very hostile. No interest seems to be manifested by the white people respecting the education of the freedpeople, as yet nothing has been done by them to promote the educational mistakes of the freedpeople.  The Freedpeople feel a deep mistrust in the subject of education, and they may be best assisted by furnishing them two or three good male teachers. But little has been done in this county to promote the educational interests of the freed people.  Last year a school was kept for a short time in the town of Wharton, and was then discontinued. During the present summer a school has been kept in the town of Wharton for the space of one month, but it is now closed on account of the summer vacation.  June 8th Mrs Margaret A. Henderson a teacher in the employ of the Bureau reported at this office for assignment to a school.  As the school in the town of Wharton was already supplied with a teacher, efforts were made to secure her a school and a suitable boarding place on some plantation. No trouble was experienced in securing a school but it was far more impossible to secure a suitable boarding place for Mrs Henderson in the family of a planter,
