the fence. Mr. Pitts did not examine my boy Will on the [inquest?] over the body of Wash, because I was afraid for him to do so & asked Mr. Pitts not to examine him. I know that Mr. Cowan did not do it for I saw him at work in the field. Mr. Vick was plowing in his land, it is about a mile from the Goodloe place to Mr Wards houses. Mr. Vick has been cultivating land at Mr. Wards & cultivates nothing on the Goodloe place except a garden. When I first let Mr. Vick have corn he asked me to send one of my boys over to see Wilson. I told him I could not did not have time, besides the river was too high to cross.

Examination in chief resumed
When J.W. Pitts requested me to let Will go to Mr. Ward's to test him as he said I was afraid for him to go & refused, the inquest held over the body of Wash was at the place where he was killed. I saw J.W. Pitts swearing parties on the ground relative to the killing & this is what I understood by holding an inquest.

Cross Examined
When Mr. Pitts said he wanted to test Will, I understood that he wanted to examine him & have him tell all he knew about the killing & give evidence.
