Testimony of Alex Wilkinsin for the State

I lived over the river at Mr. Patterson's place with Wilson Hanks. - I with Wash. Jessee Will, - little George and Adam went down to the Ferry to help some children across the river, This was on the Sunday evening that Ben Cowan was killed about between 12 & 1 o'clock.  

I saw Mr Cowan at Mr. Spruggin's house, - when we were going along we halted Mr. J.W. Pitts was coming on towards Wash, - he Wash turned to runn back.  Mr. Pitts said hold on Wash I want to talk to you and then I saw Wash go behind a tree.  Mr. Cowan had his gun walking behind his mule, as though he was trying to take sight on Wash, - he had it levelled over his mule, - The gun was pointing up the road in the direction of us, Two more men were there with guns going toward the river, On Tuesday after Ben Cowan was killed.  Mr Cowan.  Mr Rich'd Gray and two more men came into the field where I was ploughing.  Mr. Cowan asked me what I was working there for. - Mr. Cowan asked me where my Six Shooter was.  Said I want it.  I went to the house and gave it to him, - they had guns each of them, - They had a rope.  Mr Cowan made a knot & handed it to Mr. Rich'd Gray.  Mr. Gray would not put it on my neck, and other men put it on & said God damn you I will hang you, - they let me out of the bars - asked me where the men were, I said they had gone to Bellville.  They led me to the woods said they would
