After Wash was killed on Thursday we did no more work till the next Thursday when Thom Cowan came down and told us we had better go to work. We all went to the field & went to work after dinner that day. I never saw Vick packing arms till Ben Cowan was killed, have seen him packing them since.
Direct examination resumed
Mr Cowan advised us about working the crop without any one asking him to do so. The Goodloe horses are in the field, open field around & three hundred yards to the bottom timber. The time when Mr. Cowan came by to get matches when he was going hunting was before there was any falling out. Mr. Cowan moved to Mr. Ward since my father and Mr. Ward had a falling out. The first fuss between Mr Ward & my father was immediately after the last of July. At the time Ben Cowan was killed Mr. Gray was keeping a whiskey shop at the Goodloe place.
Cross Examined
I have never bought whiskey of Mr Gray,
