testimony of Joe Cowan a witness for the Defence,
I belonged to Mr. Cowan before I was free, he raised me. I have lived with him all my life. I do not know that Mr. Cowan ever had another brother killed except Ben Cowan. I was in the field replanting cotton when Wash Bramlett was killed. I was working for Mr. Cowan. Mr. Cowan sent one ahead to the field, said the mules got out. He was not far behind me. Mr. Cowan was ploughing that day Mr. Cooper was ploughing with him, [[Standford?]]. Lucy William and John were planting with me, William and John are white men. I could see Mr. Cowan and Mr. Cooper from where I was working all the time. Mr. Christ. Vick brought the news that Wash was shot. Mr. Cowan and Mr. Cooper were ploughing in the field all the time from the time they went out till Mr. Vick brought us the news of the killing.

Cross Examined
I think I was hoeing about 30 yards from the ends of the rows when Mr. Christ. Vick brought news of the killing of Wash. When he brought the news he went to Mr. Cooper and Mr. Cowan. He come from towards his ploughing.
