Lieutenant
In accordance with requirements of Circular letter from Hd Qrs Bureau R.F and A.L. State of Texas dated Galveston Texas 31st. Dec 1866. I have the honor to report: The case of assualt and stabbing with a knife, in Hayes Co. mentioned in my report of April 30th has been investigated by Lt. Richardson. The facts were, that a mutual quarrel and fight took place, between James Trembel a white man and Ballards' abusing a pair of oxen. During the fight Ballard was slightly cut with a pocket knife by Tremble. The case was tried before a majistrate in the neighborhood and Tremble dismissed. A Complaint was subsequently made at this office and an investigation had, which tends to show that the action of the majistrate was just and proper.

On the 2nd June, a freedwoman complained at this office that a Mr Perry a white man had assualted and beaten her with a rope. The circumstances of the case were, that Mary lived in a house belonging to Perry who objected to her having so many male friends. He therefore endeavoured to reduce the number by beating her with a rope. The case was referred to the Civil authorities and Perry was fined twelve dollars

June 10th Mrs. Campbell, white woman, beat her housemaid a freedwoman this case was also referred to the civil authorities and a fine imposed of six dollars

June 13th A freedboy whipped by a freedman, This case was amicably settled by advice of this office

June 17th Maggie Williamson was knocked down and kicked by a white man named Townsend, because she tried to prevent a freedman from working for him. Referred to the Civil authorities and Townsend
