one quarter of a mile from the place he was met by Frost who had taken an opposite direction.  Frost told him to return, the freedman said no, he would see Capt Rock first. Frost there struck him with a quirt when both got into a scuffle Frost fired & wounded the freedman in the thigh. The pistol must have been very close to the thigh as the freedman's pants were all burnt at the spot he was wounded. Frost was immediately arrested & placed under bonds of a (thousand dollars) for his appearance & trial next District Court in October 1867. 

2d. On the 8th day of June 1867 one Dan. G. Davis being very much under the influence of liquor & riding his horse, holding his pistol & waving it in his right hand, passed by the door steps leading to my office deliberately drew up his horse with his left hand & throwing his pistol across his left arm deliberately shot a freedman of the name of John Picket. This is one of the most cold blooded murders that ever was perpetrated. No cause nor provocation, had never seen each other previous to shooting.
