ment and the audience's. She hit happily upon the name Warner: "Oh, I can say that." When all the rest has been forgot, this shall not. She lost a Tony to Piaf's Jane Lapotaire. But even when she loses she can't lose.
Herewith, scribbled on a ticket stub, are snippets from thank-you speeches of Tony winners. Brian Backer (featured dramatic actor, The Floating Light Bulb): "Wow!" Lena Horne, who got a special Tony: "I'm so glad I'm getting these flowers before I lose my teeth." John Bury (scenic design and lighting, Amadeus), alert to the salute-to-women theme: "I'm so sorry I'm not a woman. I should like to be."
Swoosie Kurtz (featured dramatic actress, Fifth of July): "I now know what I always suspected—there is a God." Kevin Kline (musical actor, The Pirates of Penzance): "I thank Francis Coppola for hiring Raul Julia, which made him unavailable for the part." Marilyn Cooper (featured musical actress, Woman of the Year): "I'm a poker player and I say if you stay at the table long enough you're bound to come up with a winner."

We know he's handsome, a lady-killer and a football great, but can Joe Namath really sing?

"Sure, he can sing," says Richard Horner, the producer of Damn Yankees, which opens June 30 at Jones Beach Theatre. Joe Namath plays the musical's baseball-player hero. "I thought it was a good idea to find a prominent sports figure for the part," Horner explains. "He's very serious about his theatrical career. He did Li'l Abner in St. Louis last summer."
It was at Shea Stadium, only 10 miles from Jones Beach, that B'way Joe led the New York Jets to a world championship. His Damn Yankees role was played by Stephen Douglass in the hit 1955 production, Eddie Bracken has Ray Walston's role, and Susan Elizabeth Scott has Gwen Verdon's. Julienne Marie plays Namath's wife. Jean Stapleton, who found immortality with Archie Bunker, played Sister in the original company and sang "Heart." Damn Yankees runs through Sept. 6.
