"Report the disposition and feeling of the white people towards the freed people as expressed by words and actions."

Unfriendly.

EDUCATION.
"Report the feeling upon the subject of education; what steps have been taken to promote the same; what efforts the freed people are making in that direction and in what manner they may be assisted, &c., &c."

The white people are generally indifferent on the subject. The freed-people manifest a strong disposition to acquire on education and to send their children to school. Their means are too limited to permit them to do much, but they are building a store house in Austin to be used as a school house & church.

In Georgetown, they have purchased a building, which needs some repairs, which has been specially reported from this office. They need assistance to repair the building, and also require a teacher.

In San Marcos the freed-people have purchased a house and only require a teacher. Their petition for the appointment of Mr. Jenkins, I forward by this mail.
