EDUCATION.
"Report the feeling upon the subject of education; what steps have been taken to promote the same; what efforts the freed people are making in that direction and in what manner they may be assisted, &c., &c."
There is at present only one school in operation in my district the school at Millican was closed July. 1: and as they freed people were informed that they must pay for tuition, no efforts were made by them to reopen the school. I think I will be able to start that school, as soon as the epidemic is over. The school at the Edington & Adams plantation have also ceased, the f.m. refusing to pay for tuition. and I fear, that, unless the Government establishes free schools, but very few pupils, will attend school next winter.
