"Give a statement of the official business transacted during the month; its nature and your method of disposing of the same. State your office hours; the number of days absent from office, if any, and reason for the same."

During the month I have visited almost every plantation in my district, encouraging the f.m. to save the crop. I have also settled many suits brought by f.m. for unpaid wages, and have fixed their share of the corn crop. My office hours are from 8 A.M. to 3 P.M. and I have been absent from my Office 16 days, for the above mentioned reason.

"State the number of Troops at your Post and the necessity for the same; whether or not the freed people would be secure if they were removed; in other words will the civil authorities protect them and give them justice; &c., &c."

I have 4 enlisted men of the 17th U.S. Inf. on duty with me, who act as messengers and orderlies. I think the Civil Authorities are anxious to do justice to the freed people, but the reason for it is, I believe, fear, to be removed from Office
