"Report the disposition and feeling of the white people towards the freed people as expressed by words and actions."

The feeling against the freedman has largely worsened within the last three months owing to the approach of the election. The feeling is hostile and bitter and in many instances hostility to the Gov't is open and fearlessly expressed.

EDUCATION
"Report the feeling upon the subject of education; what steps have been taken to promote the same; what efforts the freed people are making in that direction and in what manner they have been assisted, &c., &c."

Considerable interest is manifested by the freed people in educating their children. They are however unable to pay a sufficient amount to employ a efficient teacher. The School at Anderson has made good progress, but the teacher Mr Genaty closes the school on account of not having received the tuition as agreed. I have secured another teacher, but I fear the change will injure the school. There are two schools in operation in Navasota. also several on plantations chiefly night schools.
