Business transacted has been explaining and approving of Contracts, settling of old contracts, hearing complaints giving advice, pushing the work on the School-house &c  Office hours from 9 A.M. to 4 P.M. Was absent from office three days. Went to Austin

"State the number of Troops at your Post and the necessity for the same; whether or not the freed people would be secure if they were removed; in other words will the civil authorities protect them and give them justice; &c., &c."

NO troops at this post. I believe that their presence is greatly needed, to carry out the decisions of the Bureau and to protect the freedmen. The Civil Authorities are too weak to protect freedmen even when they wish to.
