Marshall Texas March 30th 1868

Jerry. Butts (freedman) being sworn states as follows. Last sunday I went to visit my wife who lives at Mrs Mumas on the Sabine River, and while talking with her in the woods Mr William Munden and Mr Frank Stoval approached me with their guns, and discharged three shoots at me, one of the balls passing through my hat. I then fled and returned to Mr Taylors plantation. This morning while I was at work in the field, Mr Munden and Mr Stoval came towards me with guns and pistols, and as I believed they intended to kill me I again fled and have come to you for protection.
