| Mar. 25. 68 | R.S. Gerald (white) | Jerry Parks (colored) | Murder - Said Jerry Parks (freedman) was shot by R.S. Gerald while at work in his Blacksmith shop between 9 and 10 oclock A.M. The criminal was promptly arrested by the military authorities and placed in irons under a strong guard and every precaution taken to prevent an escape or any attempt to a rescue on the part of his friend. The altercation arose from some difficulty about an old wagon, but the freedman gave no cause whereby Gerald could in any manner be justified in committing the act. Said freedman
was a member of the Board of Registrars for the county of Tyler and being acting in the capacity of a government official, I would earnestly recommend that his case be submitted to a military commission for trial |
