Office Sub. Asst. Comm. Bu. R.F. & A.L.
Marshall Texas, April 8th 1868.

John H. Battle, freedman, being sworn, states as follows: I work for Mrs. Dr. Littlejohn on her plantation in this County, and on yesterday at 1 o'clock P.M. Mr. Angus Littlejohn came to me, as I was cleaning a mule, that had been given to me by Dr. Littlejohn, to cultivate the crop, and said, that I must give up the mule. I told him, that the mule had been given to me by his father. He then told me to hush up or he would shoot my damned head off. After which he picked up some staves and struck me on the head. I reported him to his father, who threatened to shoot, and brought out a double barrelled gun, so I fled and have come to you for protection.
