Chief business settling Labor Contracts also quarrells & difficulties between Freedmen  Office hours from 9 to 5 oclk & I spend Four Days at Brenham and 1 Day at Washington every week. One Day in travelling

"State the number of Troops at your Post and the necessity for the same; whether or not the freed people would be secure if they were removed; in other words, will the civil authorities protect them, and give them justice? &c."

2 Companies 17th Infantry USA. Unknown Detachments also coming & leaving frequently. These Troops are very necessary to preserve order and while the Civil Authorities may desire they would be inefficient without Troops stationed here
