"Give a statement of the official business transacted during the month, its nature, and your method of disposing of the same.  State your office hours, the number of days absent from office, if any, and reason for the same."

I entered upon the duties of the office on 17th Just, did not get the office fitted up for business until 22 Just. I proceed under Gen. orders No 4 and hold a court every Saturday, there are nine cases on the docket of which have been disposed of

"State the number of Troops at your Post and the necessity for the same; whether or not the freed people would be secure if they were removed; in other words, will the civil authorities protect them and give them justice? &c".

No troops here, we have a good Sheriff and I believe we will be able to keep order without troops and the service of a detective to hunt out and arrest some bad cases infesting this Dist. who cannot be caught in the ordinary way, would do us more good that a company of cavalry. We can't get hold of them is the great dificutly
