There is now the worst state of things existing in this community that can be imagined. Desperate men pass through town daily armed with shot-guns and revolvers Horse stealing is a common thing; breaking into store houses is finding a place in the list of outrages and robberies and murder upon the public roads is almost of daily occurrence. The people are very much excited and it needs but a spark to set the whole mass in flames. It is a wonder to the people and to myself that I still live to tell you of these things. Perhaps the fact that I am constantly armed saves me from assassination. When I am attacked I am determined to fight it out till the last. I am sure then people will give me no [[?]] for life, and then will crowd upon me. Shall this state of things remain. Can we have solider in case we have violence? I do not see how I could get out of this country now if i would try. Every road seems to be guarded. Those that appeared to be friends to the Government when Troops were stationed here now turn a cold shoulder, fearing that they too may become spotted for the guilotine of public censure. There is no pleasure in living a life like this I am sure, hoping that the government will soon do something
