"Give a statement of the official business transacted during the month, its nature, and your method of disposing of the same. State your office hours, the number of days absent from office, if any, and reason for the same."

Official duties consisted in effecting settlements between Planter & employees - which has been accomplished satisfactorily as a rule to all parties - without litigation, looking after the school interests, adjudicating disputes between the freedpeople attending to the Sunday school & its interest & making myself as generally useful as possible. Office hours 8 @ 4 o.c Absent 6 days attending to affairs on plantations &c. &c.

"State the number of Troops at your Post and the necessity for the same; whether or not the freed people would be secure if they were removed; in other words, will the civil authorities protect them and give them justice? &c."

No troops. A freedmen is sentenced to be hung on the 18th of Decr. I fear no trouble from the Freedmen but certain bad white men may take advantage of the event to cause a disturbance which is evidently desired. I think if the Governor were to grant a petition to commute his sentence which has gone in, & should he be started for Huntsville, I am confident he would be hung without hesitation by the people. I think it would be well to have a small detatchment sent at once to be purposed for any emergency.
