Flying blacks
'Tuskegee Airmen' to hold Detroit reunion tomorrow

As World War II neared its end in 1945, residents of Toledo were startled one day by a squadron of unmarked "mystery" planes that thundered over the city.

The planes, B-25 bombers, dipped low along the Maumee River, soared under the Anthony Wayne Bridge in an extraordinary maneuver, and disappeared out over Lake Erie.

The planes which some frightened residents never forgot were not flown by the

being ignored or shuttled off to minor duties. "Quotas of black flyers were strictly limited...only a small percentage of us latecomers ever saw combat or were able to use "our" flight training in any way, " said Dixione, a historian of sorts for the group of ex-flyers.

Segregation in military, like civilian life, was firmly entrenched in the 40's.

???Dixione faced a court-martial because a German prisoner, then working at the base service was seen sneaking to him
