[5 images]
The world was electrified when the news flashed that a Negro fighter pilot with the U. S. Army Air Forces had downed a German plane in combat over Castelvetrano. Now Lieutenatn Charles Hall's exploit is written on pages of history of the race's contribution to the war effort. Men of the famous 99th Fighter Squadron have Vindicated the judgement [[judgment]] of their officers and of those who fought to have our pilots in actual combat, as witness the reports coming in from the battlefront. Man for man, they are unexcelled as air fighters just as they were acclaimed as great land warriors.
Lieut. James T. Wiley, extreme left, is typical of P40 fighter pilots, now taking part in the action of Sicily.
Upper center: Here the vitally important ground crew turns up a plane for a foray against the enemy.
Lower center: These pilots are shown coming in from their missions to report to their intelligence officer. Right: The ground crew cleans up one of the "old equalizers," the airplane's guns, which are among the most deadly weapons carried by any type of aircraft. And Tuskegee celebrates her second anniversary as an air base she can point with pride to these young heroes who sweep through the skies that democracy might endure.
