PREFACE.

Perhaps nothing is more animating to a child than the receipt of a letter, unless it be a consciousness of being able to return an answer. But the first essays of this kind are always attended with anxiety, and generally prosecuted with reluctance. Hence the necessity of some kind of assistant.
