Gentlemen:
Acknowledging receipt of your favor 4th inst. returning Mr. Freer’s voucher, receipted, for the 11 Makimono cases, in reply to mine of 2nd inst. I note that you would suggest making a claim on the Railroad Company for the cost of replacing the breakage of the glass in center section of the long makimono case, and think it advisable, inasmuch as you have all the data in your possession, for you to take the matter of this breakage up with the Agent of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company at New York who signed the bill of lading, and explain to him that it is necessary for you to send two men to Washington to place the breakage. I would appreciate it very much if you will do this.
Will you now please send your men to Washington to replace the breakage, and as suggested in your letter of February 28th, have them look into the matter of the finish on the top of this case and the two dents reported in base of one “pottery” base while they are there. Finally let me hear from you as to this in order that I may advise Mr. Rathbun fully in the matter.
Yours truly,
(Signed) George W. Alger

P.S. I am enclosing herewith, B/L of the Penna R. R. Co. covering the long makimono case. After it has served it’s purpose, kindly return,
