Feb. 8, 1894.

Mr. G. Whaley,
Compagnie des Chemins de Fer de l’Ouest,
Rue de Rome, 44, Paris, France.

My dear Sir:

Your favor of Jan. 24 reached me this morning on my return from New York where I had been spending a few days. I am glad to know that Mr. Hecker succeeded in meeting you, and although I have not yet heard from him I acknowledge my obligations for the courteous treatment I am sure he has received from you.

As to prices of American freight cars, I would say that they average as follows:

Our best class of broad guage [[gauge]], eight wheel, box freight cars equipped with air brakes, vertical plane couplers, metal brake beams, cast iron wheels, 30 tons capacity and 34 to 35 ft. long, are from $600.00 to $650.00 each.

Stock cars equipped the same as the box cars as above stated, without feeding or watering appliances, will cost $600.00 to $650.00 each. With the feeding and watering attachments, $25.00 to $100.00 extra in accordance with the design of the appliances added.

Coal cars equipped with air brakes, vertical plane couplers, metal brake beams, cast iron wheels, of broad guage [[gauge]] and with eight wheels, 30 tons capacity and 34 to 35 ft. long, from $475.00 to $525.00 each.

Flat cars of the same style as the coal and equipped in the same manner will cost from $325.00 to $400.00 each.

The difference in the prices above noted is caused by the difference in value of the materials used. Below are present prices of some of the standard articles now in general use in this country.
