Dear Sir:

Your letter of July 12 reached me yesterday and I am glad to know of your continued good health, and am very sorry that I cannot visit Japan this year. I hope however fortune will be kind enough to send me your way next year, but as business matters are very much confused in this country at present, I do not know whether or not it will be possible for me to absent myself next year long enough for a journey to Japan, though I am living in the hope of doing so.

I knew you would not forget to look after my little commissions with Mr. Joraku but thought that possibly a note from me to you, if shown the artist, might induce him to finish my work which he now has in hand. As you say, he is a royal artist and I know how busy he must be. When you see him, present to him my kindest remembrances. I hope he will have long life and great success. I need not add that similar wishes go to you.
