tell him that you saw the Carlysle portrait and express to him practically what you said to me in your letter concerning this picture. This friend of mine knows Whistler very well, and he says that if the old gentleman’s mood is not of the right sort when you appear the best way to smooth him down will be to introduce the Carlysle portrait. However, all of this I lave [[leave]] to your own good judgment.

I think I told you there were three small paintings in pastel and water color beside the large oil painting. If they are ready, I will consider it a great favor to have all four brought over together. If however you can find it possible to bring only the three small ones, I will be very grateful.

Am glad to know that you are to take Laferme with you to Paris. You will find him perfect, and it seems to me a trip to Paris without him would be like a dinner at Delmonico’s without Phillip. Should you have occasion to call at Whistler’s house in Paris, his address there is 110 Rue du Bac, and Laferme has been there frequently enough with me to find you the house very easily.

Politics continue very exciting, and so far as experts can judge it seems very probable that McKinley will be surely elected.

With cordial regards, in which Col. Hecker and Will join, I remain,

Yours sincerely,
Charles L. Freer

P.S.
Of course in my expense of packing &c. &c in connection with the Whistler paintings I will most gladly discuss. I am very anxious to get [[?]] things.
