States that two freedmen named George McDaniel and Ezekiel Littleton from Tyler County report that on Saturday night, August. 29th a mob came to their house and ordered them to come out, which they refused to do, they then tried to force open the door, when one of the freedmen fired on their assalants, which was returned by them wounding one freedman and one child, that the following men were among the mob, Dick. Hanks, Bob. Barkley, Jim Johnigan, Frank Johnigan, Tom Coward, Webster Houston, Frank Steele Bill May and John Marston; another freedman named Webster Malton reports a similar case, and that the whites threaten to drive every "nigger" out who does not work for white men, that they shall not work on their own hook |
